Tattoo aftercare: what to actually do

The first few weeks, explained simply — what's normal and what's not.

The first few days

  • Follow whatever removal timing your artist gave you for your specific wrap (second-skin film vs. traditional bandage) — this varies by studio.
  • Wash gently with a fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water once the initial wrap comes off, then pat dry — never rub.

Ongoing care

  • Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, alcohol-free moisturizer a few times a day — the tattoo should look moist, not greasy or caked.
  • Avoid swimming, soaking, direct sun, and tight clothing over the area for at least two weeks.
  • Don't pick at peeling or flaking skin — it will come off naturally.

When to actually worry

  • Some redness and mild swelling in the first couple of days is normal. Spreading redness, warmth, fever, or pus are not — contact your artist or a doctor.
