How much do tattoos actually cost?

What drives tattoo pricing, and why 'how much for this?' rarely has a one-line answer.

Why prices vary so much

  • Size, placement, level of detail, and color all change how long a piece takes — and time is what you're mostly paying for.
  • An artist's experience and demand matter too — a highly sought-after artist's calendar being full is itself part of what you're paying for.

What's usually included

  • A quote should cover the full session(s), materials, and aftercare guidance — ask upfront if touch-ups are included or separately priced.
  • Most studios require a non-refundable deposit to hold your appointment, credited toward the final price.

Don't shop on price alone

  • A cheaper quote from an unfamiliar artist isn't a discount if the healed result, hygiene standards, or overall experience suffer for it.
