Machines
- Rotary machines are quieter, lower-maintenance, and the standard starting point for most new artists today.
- Coil machines give more tactile feedback for some styles (traditional, bold linework) but need more setup and maintenance experience.
Needles and inks
- Cartridge needles (RL, RS, M1, RM configurations covering lining, shading, and coloring) are the standard, safer, single-use option.
- Buy ink only from suppliers who publish batch/lot testing — this isn't optional, it's a client-safety requirement.
PPE and sterilization
- Single-use gloves, machine bags, ink caps, and surface barriers are non-negotiable for every client, every time.
- A proper autoclave (not just an ultrasonic cleaner) is required for any reusable equipment — check your local health authority's specific requirements.
